Sharad Pawar, the President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP,) on the 11th of March, announced, he will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra.

During a press conference, Mr. Pawar said, “I thought that already two members of my family are contesting polls this time and hence I felt this is right time to take decision to not contest, since I already have contested 14 times in the past.”

According to sources, Supriya Sule, the daughter of Sharad Pawar, and Parth Pawar, Sharad’s grandson, will contest the Lok Sabha elections. Parth is expected to contest in the Maval constituency.

On the other hand, Vijay Singh Mohite Patil, or his son, Ranjit Mohite Patil, will contest in the Madha constituency.

The decision was taken after a discussion with the Mohite family.

Speaking about the reason behind the sudden change of mind, it is said, the Mohite family was unhappy with Sharad Pawar contesting in the Madha constituency as they would not get a chance to contest. Another reason being cited is the alliance parties’ request to Sharad Pawar to campaign for the regional parties, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Maharashtra will contest a total of 48 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which will be held in four phases in the State. The Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections are scheduled on the 11th, 18th, 23rd and 29th of April 2019.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
